Flashes of Hope: Miracle Portraits
Flashes of Hope, a new service now offered at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, creates positive experiences through photographs for chronically ill pediatric patients and their families, free of charge.
Hospital playrooms and patient rooms are transformed into photography studios as a volunteer team of skilled photographers, stylists, makeup artists and hairstylists work collaboratively to help chronically ill children feel better about their changing appearance by celebrating it through photos. For a few magical moments, children who haven't wanted to get out of bed are suddenly laughing, smiling and sharing their unique personalities. Nurses can participate, and families are presented with portaits that will forever preserve the beauty, grace and dignity of their child.
"Flashes of Hope provides a sense of normalcy for our patients and families, creating positive memories of the healthcare experience that they will remember for years to come," says Amy Bullock, director of Child Life/Child Development Services.
