UCLA Lung Cancer Screening Program Offers New Hope
With a team of UCLA experts in thoracic imaging, pulmonary medicine, medical oncology, radiation oncology and thoracic surgery, the UCLA Lung Cancer Screening Program offers new hope for patients at high risk for lung cancer. Patients are screened using high-quality, state-of-the-art computed tomography (CT) imaging that exposes them to one-half to one-fifth the radiation used in typical CT procedures.
"Early detection and treatment of lung cancer may significantly improve quality of life and survival rates," states Brian Barnes, nurse practitioner for the UCLA Lung Cancer Screening Program.
More than 200,000 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed each year in the U.S., and the prognosis is poor for patients whose cancer is detected in its advanced stages. "Informing patients and the community about the importance of lung cancer prevention, surveillance, and treatment are keys to improving survival and I'm proud to be part of that process," says Brian.
