New Interim Medical Director
Named at SMUCLA
James Atkinson, M.D., has been named interim medical director at SMUCLA, succeeding Michael Herbst, M.D., whose focus has shifted to working on information technology and privacy issues for the health system.
Dr. Atkinson has built a long and illustrious career with UCLA that dates back to 1976, when he started his internship and residency in general surgery. Since 2004, he has been senior medical director and executive director of Transition Planning for UCLA Health System. He oversaw the monumental task of completing and fitting-up Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and was instrumental in the completion and occupancy of the Nethercutt Emergency Center and Southwest Wing at SMUCLA.
Dr. Atkinson also has been responsible for implementing and strengthening supply chain and capital controls for the health system, as well as the growth of academic programs in general and pediatric surgery.
