First Surgery Makes History

Dr. H. Gill Cryer in new Emergency Department.

It was pretty exciting," is the way Dr. H. Gill Cryer, director of Trauma and Emergency Services and chief of Trauma and Critical Care, summed up his first surgery in the new hospital—the first surgery in the new Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

"It was a busy day, but a day we had been planning for a long while. It was unique because we knew we would have to quit doing what we do at one hospital and start working for the first time at the other hospital. We knew there would be that first surgery, we just didn't know when it would come."

It came at 2:14 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, when Ian Fagan required an emergency appendectomy. "Everything went smoothly," reports Dr. Cryer, who was assisted by Dr. Elizabeth Benjamin. "The surgery itself is pretty routine, so it was just a matter of locating everything we needed in new surroundings."

When asked about the new equipment with which each of the OR suites is outfitted, Dr. Cryer confirmed all was in working order. "During surgery I used the cameras and we could view everything on the monitors so we took advantage of the new green lighting as well. I also pulled up the patient's X-rays and CT scan. Having that new scanner in the emergency department makes things so much faster," he notes.

After surgery, the patient related, "I went to school at UCLA and met my wife here; my parents met here. My father went to medical school here and interned at the VA across the street. So, my being the first surgical patient here is exciting. It's pretty interesting to be a part of history."

Dr. Cryer says, "I brought my own camera and all the nurses came over and wanted to be part of the photo to celebrate the first surgery. I think they feel as I do that this is a fantastic place. We spent a lot of time working to design it so that it would be the very best hospital in the world, and it is certainly that."
