FITWELL
To
reflect today’s passion for good health, maybe the old
adage, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with the
first step,” should instead say, “The journey
to a lifetime of fitness begins with the first step.”
To make
your first and subsequent steps easier, all UCLA employees
are invited to join BruinWalkers, a free walking program designed
to make walking for health easy and enjoyable, especially
during the workweek. “The Recreation Department has
received an unprecedented amount of funding from the UC Be
Smart About Safety Program and have used this to introduce
FITWELL, a campus-wide wellness initiative,” says Patti
Oliver, chair of the UCLA Hospital System Wellness Initiative.
Bruinwalkers,
UCLA Recreation’s first FITWELL program, hopes to motivate
UCLA faculty, staff and students towards healthy lifestyle
choices through education and opportunities.
BruinWalkers
is free and will offer training sessions on proper walking,
clinics to train walking guides, special events, prizes, and
a web site where you can log in your mileage, see graphs of
your progress and download maps and descriptions of walking
routes. You’ll also be able to upload podcasts to your
iPod for guided walks, giving you historical and other highlights
as you negotiate the routes.
To get
started, here’s what you need to do:
- Register
to track your steps/miles, body metrics and energy level
with the Bruinwalkers Activity Tracker. You can even record
notes about your walks and workouts.
- Pick
up your free pedometer at the FITWELL desk of the John Wooden
Center.

Hospital System Wellness Initiative will inform you as FITWELL
develops additional health-oriented opportunities for UCLA
employees. |
