Giving Back to the Volunteers

Over 200 UCLA Medical Center volunteers attended the annual luncheon held in their honor at the Four Seasons Hotel on Friday, October 27. The festivities included an awards ceremony in gratitude to the volunteers who have generously given extraordinary hours of service to the Westwood hospital throughout the years.

Rona Goldstein and Steve Knafel were the highest award winners at 13,000 hours of service. Sylvia Epstein, age 95 years, was also honored for her 40 years of service to UCLA Medical Center. Many other volunteers were honored for their invaluable service and dedication to the hospital. Kathy Sipes, director of volunteers, spoke about the contributions of our many volunteers and how the Medical Center benefits from their unique talents and skills.

The Hamilton Academy of Music Jazz Studies entertained the attendees with their soothing jazz while the volunteers enjoyed dessert. Long-time volunteer Judy Smith played the piano while another volunteer, Una O’Donovan, played the harp — as she usually does every Tuesday at the hospital — to an appreciative audience.

UCLA Healthcare associate director Marge Cunningham attended the event as well as staff members from the many departments that rely on volunteers for much-needed services. Amir Rubin, chief operating officer, spoke at the lunch, gratefully acknowledging the contributions of volunteers.

The volunteers work in over 250 locations within the hospital performing a wide variety of duties including Information Desk, Surgical Waiting Area, People-Animal Connection, Ambassador Program and Patient Escort.

The UCLA Medical Center Auxiliary sponsors this annual event.
