Started three years ago, the UCLA Healthcare Wellness Initiative experienced a significant growth spurt this past year with the addition of massage therapy, yoga, smoking cessation, education sessions, nutrition information, mindfulness and stress reduction, and the Bruin Walker's program. There is virtually something for everyone!
One employee who has taken advantage of the many Wellness Initiative offerings is Lea Ann Cook, RN, MSN, who until recently was the Unit Director for 7EI/9EI and the Critical Care Transport Team. Ms. Cook is currently developing a new service aimed at improving patient's experiences within our health system. Prior to the Wellness Initiative, Ms. Cook experienced significant levels of stress-related neck pain almost daily, and was searching for ways to improve her wellness that were accessible, affordable and compatible with her busy life. The Wellness Program provided some of those solutions.
Ms. Cook started scheduling weekly massages a year ago. "It is the best $15 I spend all week," she says. "Before, by Friday afternoon, I could barely move my neck. The 20-minute massage lets me start my weekend with less stiffness, I can enjoy a better quality of life on the weekend, and I feel more refreshed by Monday morning." A firm believer in the power of massage, Ms. Cook has given massage therapy gift certificates to co-workers many times as a gesture of appreciation.
Approximately four months ago, she added bi-weekly yoga classes. Because of some medical challenges, she was nervous about her ability to participate and keep up with the class. Ms. Cook soon discovered that she could easily adapt the movements to her abilities, and immediately experienced the relaxing and cathartic power of yoga. "I knew I couldn't do all the poses, and I felt awkward at first," Ms. Cook states, "but the yoga class has forged a supportive and accepting environment, accommodating a wide range of ages and capabilities. I realized yoga is for anyone who has 'wellness' as a priority in his or her life.
"I feel more energized, peaceful and relaxed by participating in the Wellness Initiative programs. I feel better than I have in years," she says. "Most importantly, the UCLA Wellness Initiative sends a message to employees that the company cares about the health of its people. I appreciate knowing UCLA supports employees making healthy choices, and makes the programs compatible with our busy lives."
