New Procedure and Treatment Unit Opens at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital

The new Procedure and Treatment Unit (formerly called the Ambulatory Care Unit and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit) opened at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital on September 15.

The combined, 30-bed unit features state-of-the-art technology and is located in 3 Southwest Wing. Its opening marks the completion of all units planned for this building, which also houses the new Nethercutt Emergency Center, Laboratory, Birthing Center and Solid Oncology Unit.

Initially, patients will continue to register in Admissions before being directed to the unit. Eventually, however, patients will register, prep for and recover from their procedures in the new unit, which also will accommodate 24-hour stays.

The Surgical Waiting Area will move to 3 SWW when the PACU/ACU becomes fully functional in late 2008.

Make a Difference: Send Hope and Miracles for the Holidays

Art has the power to help heal. For hospitalized children, art can be a way to express their hopes and their joys. Visions of the holiday season created by patients at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA adorn the 2008 holiday card and gift tag collection. We also offer a collector's Barbie Holiday Card, provided by Mattel, Inc.

By purchasing a set of these cards, you help our young patients. Proceeds from the sale of Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA holiday cards benefit the Child Life/Child Development Program, whose specialists work with hospitalized children to help ease their anxieties and fears.

Veronica Jacobs suffered from a debilitating neurological disorder called dystonia, a result of the brain firing abnormally, sending impulses of electricity to muscles that caused them to contract constantly.

Watch her inspirational story about how UCLA neurosurgeon Dr. Antonio DeSalles and a surgically implanted pacemaker have given her a new lease on life.
